Michael Jackson:Gone
Those that come to our shows, know that we love 80's music. And when it comes to 80's music, there is no pop star bigger than Michael Jackson. I won't lie, Dirt Cheap!!! loves Michael Jackson music. I can admit it. And when we play the songs, people pack the dance floor. Whether or not you thought he was strange, or just weird, there is just no denying that he was an exceptional singer and songwriter. He wrote the soundtrack for Generation X, and there will not be another one like him. Like Elvis before him, he set trends, showed us the dance moves, and entertained us, like entertainers should; and set the bar high for those in his wake. He was as entertaining to watch, as he was to listen to. Like all great entertainers, he was here, made his mark, and left sooner than we expected. His music lives on. We're playing it and you can hear it for yourself this Saturday!
Attention: Guitar Magazine SubscribersWho out there subscribes the any of the “Guitar Mags”? I used to get a ton of them, but recently I am letting all my subscriptions expire. I have always used the mags for decisions on gear purchases. Lately, I have found that these magazines are totally useless in that respect. There is not one 100% honest review in any of them. I have found that any magazine that is advertiser driven suffers from bogus gear reviews. How can all products can be 5 out of 5 stars? Surely, there has to be one turd? Not so, according to the magazines. Of course, since the advertiser pays to advertise their product in the magazine, they would not appreciate a review that was less than “Awesome”. The magazine editors would rather write a fluff review than to lose advertisers. Word of warning, don’t ever buy gear because it got a great review in a guitar rag. What about the tabs? I have found that most of the tabs are aimed for the bedroom metal shredders and are not marketed to the gigging musician. I have no interest in playing the newest death metal. Who is going to dance to that stuff? Plus, how many copies of “Sweet Home Alabama, Stairway to Heaven”, and “You Shook Me All Night Long” does one person need? If you subscribe the any of the guitar mags, you will probably get one of these song tabs every other month. I have probably collected a dozen of each over the years, thanks to the guitar mags. To sum it up, I haven’t used a tab from a magazine in the last 8 years. So you still want to subscribe to one? The only one that I would recommend is “Premier Guitar”. It contains no tabs, and actually has some great articles about tone, guitar setup and decent reviews. If you are looking for sound engineering/recording mag, the only one to read is “Sound on Sound” from Great Britain, the rest is garbage. Always take magazine reviews with a grain of salt, because the advertiser probably paid for the review to be positive. |
The Beatles-Remastered 9/9/09I may be the only one excited by the Beatles catalog being remastered for released on 9/9/2009. I have been listening to these cd's from 1987, and I have to say they are the most horrid sounding releases. Actually, I didn't realize how bad these remasters from 1987 were until I heard the newer Beatles Anthology, which sounds great. I have been waiting for a re-release of the catalog ever since. Why do the 1987 masters sound so bad? Back in 1987 digital remastering was in in infancy, and technology has came a long way since. The digital converters back then were turds! Even though I have all of the 1987 remastered CDs, I will be getting all the of new remasters. My birthday is the day before, so I will happily take all the cd's you want to buy me. Mono and Stereo versions! Just Say No to Nickelback! There are very few music artists that I dislike more than Nickelback. They garner very little respect in the professional music industry, and are constantly ripped on by critics, and for good reason. Anyone who has a clue about singing, can detect the fake tenor voice that they use. This is the fake low gravely vocal sound that they are known for. It is a forced, unnatural vocal tone, that sounds very obvious to most musicians and is like musical kryptonite. Another really bad example of this is Hinder. Hinder's vocalist does the fake tenor to the extreme, and it sounds horrible. What garbage! If you like Nickelback, it is probably because you like to listen to the same song over and over. Check out the MP3 clip of "How You Remind Me" and "Someday". It is the same song with different words. For Real! It has the same breaks, and breakdowns, right down to the second. I guess you could say that when you find a good formula you should stick with it. Well, they are laughing all the way to the bank! Needless to say, you will never hear Dirt Cheap!!! do a Nickelback cover song! |
